I like the standuppy old school Motown-esque tone.

I use fingers for picking. "Treble " and "twang" are two words never used at my place.

I'm using D'addario Half-Rounds on mine.

The 'best" is subject to much interpretation.

But I like the D'addarios...

Thanks, ZenG...I agree with you on all counts. If the LaBellas don't give me satisfaction, I will order the D'addario's and, I play Mustang Sally as well, even if I don't have to!

Mine is the tobacco sunburst model, and it runs slightly over six pounds, according to my bathroom scale.
I'm not certain where I heard it, but what I heard was that the solid finish ran a little heavier, perhaps because they could get away with different or different quality wood with a solid finish. YMMV.

That could very well be...I don't know if you have experienced any neck dive, but mine is a black one, and weighs just under 8 pounds (according to a very accurate digital fish scale). It has some neck dive so I am thinking the neck and head stock could also have some bearing. Does anyone else have any input?

Noob question here: My red Jaguar SS should be arriving in a couple of days. I'm an old geezer (mid 50s) and always wanted to learn the bass. I tried a standard sized Ibanez, but realized my fingers are really too short- so after much review of short scales it came down to the Jag or the Jr Jet, and the Jag won out. After finding this 7 year thread, I am convinced I've made the right decision! Here is my question: Once it arrives, I am having the strings swapped out to some flat wounds at my local GC. (watching a few youtube comparisons led me to this initial decision) Should I have the tech do any "set up" or at my novice level, can I expect this beast to be OK right out of the box? And if so, what type of set up will be done? Shouldn't the specs out of the factory be standardized, or are there a few things that might be out of wack? After perusing this thread, I know a ton of people are doing various mods, but just not sure about the set up term, and what that actually means. Thanks in advance for any advice- and I'm glad to be aboard!

I would have the tech to a complete setup after installing the new strings. If you are a noob, you are better off to get started off on the right foot. That is, of course, if the tech is competent...I'm an older geezer but I have had some experience and would suggest this as a starting point.

I would suggest getting the frets dressed and leveled in addition to the basic setup. I would also suggest that you learn how to adjust the action yourself if you don't know how already. My experience has been that the neck may need tweaking for a bit until the wood settles in. It may take as much as a year or so but it will settle in.

The Jag SS is a great platform for learning this kind of stuff.
