Squier Jaguar Short Scale Club Part 3

It's Rustoleum 2X Ocean Mist.
Rustoeum has taken over much of the world of hobby paints including Floquil, Testors, anf Poly nS. Unfor\tunately to this point it has opted not to manufacture the model railroaders favorite spirit thinner paint Floquil or water based Poly S. Luckily they produce some pretty amazing paints in shake cans like 2x Ocean Mist and a set of stone and green colors that match the old Marshall Fields Bldg in Chicago.

I would like a number as well. I got this as a Christmas gift from my daughter and son-in-law last year. I put Dimarzio pickups on it and a Fender hi-mass bridge, and DR Legend flats. Great playing and sounding bass that rivals others in my collection costing 3-4x the street price (when these were available.) I hope Fender reconsiders and puts these back in their lineup. I also have the newer 32" version, but this one is just easier to pick up and play around with. Also, the $100 price difference is a lot for many people in this market.

Oh, it was on my list for sure. I asked for the Squier, an Ibanez Talman 30, or a Luna Tatoo 30. This is what they picked, which was what I was hoping for. Color and everything. Of course, I would love any gift from my daughter... Thanks for asking!
The red has a well deserved reputation for being beautiful. Mine is in silver, I was having problems with playing close to the nut with my Squier Precision PJ and tried my silver Jaguar at the local Fender dealer and found it played much better

I tried my silver Jaguar at the local Fender dealer and it cured my problem with the 34 in neck on my Squier Precision PJ so the Precision went away and the silver Jag got to stay. With my hands & arms 30" or 28.6 inch works much better. When I was younger I had 2 short scale basses a 67 Fender Mustang Bass and a 67 Gibson EB-O as well as a '67 Fender Jazz Bass. When I was younger both 30 and 34 inch necks work but with arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome 32 inch or less works better. Oh, the Mustang, EB-O and Jazz Bass all got sold over time as I quit playing bass in my 20'. This iteration of Frank the Bass Player came with retirement. Unfortunately retirement also means being more careful with money

indeed...one of the reasons I'm selling off many of my basses, mostly the long scales that don't get play time. I haven't retired yet, but I'm not far off and health issues such as arthritis are taking a toll. BTW- the silver is an awesome color!

Thanks. Have you tried acupuncture , for both arthritis and carpal tunnel , and its has really helped.
I tried a long neck bass and it really didn't work for me

That's what I found. The Jag shorty was my first electric bass and when I was in the market for something a bit more high-end I had a really hard time finding something I liked mainly due to how good the Jag is. I'd try out basses that were five times the price and even more, and just about every time I'd leave the store thinking that none of them played as nicely as my little Jag. It took a lucky break finding a deal where I bought both a fretless and fretted Warmoth necks with a Pbass body, and then getting both necks worked on by a great luthier, before I was convinced that I had something to replace the Jag.

that's right. Leo Fender knew something when he developed one last bass before he left CBS/Fender. The Mustang Bass has turned into a classic and it bred the Jaguar Bass which has done extremely well as a Squier Bass. Les Paul when he was at Gibson developed the really premier 30 inch scale basses with the EB-O, EB=1
EB-2 and EB-3 as well as the original EB-O design that ,most people consider as an Les Paul Bass. Then Danelectro, Hofner and Guild produced high quality 30 inch scale basses/. Leo Fender took all of his bass knowledge to produce the Mustang Bass and then Fender of Japan took that knowledge to produce 30 inch neck
Mustang, Precision and Jazz basses for the Asian market. And now Fender has created as its lowest cost bass the Squier branded Precision Mini. Although not a bass player, Leo Fender really had the soul of a bass player when he set down the basic architecture for all of basses (my own bias, I like my Precision Mini more than any other bass that I have owned which included 67 Jazz Bass, 67 Mustang Bass, 67 Gibs0n EB-O, 2019 Fender CB-60 acoustic electric bass, 19 Squier Precision PJ and alas our much loved Squier Jaguar Bass. One of the strong influences that Fender maintains overt Indonesia/Cort based production is that until the pandemic hit Fender Custom shop rotated craftsmen to consult and train tradesmen on the Squier Indonesian production line

Hey I finally learned how to post a picture! I'd posted earlier but the pic was weird, so here ya go! This Jaguar is my favorite bass of my four. It's just my size!

Don't mind the funky looking bridge adjustments. I've got a black Kickass bridge on it's way. I put the Quarter Pounders in myself and I'm going to attempt to set up and intonate it myself so I can save money. I have black screws on the way for the pickguard. I'm painting the control plate satin black with a white edge. New pots once I decide what ones to get. I plan on getting some black Hipshot tuners with an Xtender as well. It's already looking pretty awesome and these QPs really make it roar!

Recently I decided - like many these days - to get me an inexpensive bass to mod. The first bass to come to mind was the VM Jag SS. I had played it a few times before, and remembered really liking the neck and general build quality for its price.

After a couple months watching, I was able to snatch up a 2016 Indonesian made version locally on Craigslist for $200. Great condition.

After a fews days play now I've discovered there's a few things I don't like and more I do. But, the ones I don't like may be a problem:

1. Upper fret access. I like playing "up there" and the access past the 17th is annoying.
2. I don't like where the "leg rest hump" (is there a word for that spot?) is. I think it should be forward a bit from where it is not only bringing the nut a bit closer to my body but, also.......NECK DIVE! Would help a bit moving that point forward. *Ultralite tuners are in the neck dive mitigation plan*

So, I'm wondering if any ya'll have done body sculpting to your modded VMJags. If so, any issues I should watch out for?

Conversely, should I even mod this or just keep it as is and keep searching for something else to de-fret? It's all original and in REALLY good condition. As in '"Hey. I think I want to take up the bass." *goes to Guitar Center* "I like this one... " * never plays again*' sort of condition. I'll probably never use it as is. Would probably just sell it at some point or give to one of my nieces or nephews when they have a interest. Actually one of my nieces started playing bass in school and was going to buy one with her Xmas money last year. Instead bought a bunch of Sims packs :(

Anywho, below is a mockup of the body sculpting I'm thinking about. The body will be stripped so working with an unfinished body.

If you are going to mod the body, any thought about getting rid of the Jazz Bass Pickup at the bridge and making it a 30" Precision like bass. Since you are going to strip the body anyway why not remove the bridge pickup and put a plug in that position and maybe even pull the bridge pickup knob/pot/wiring and put a plug in that hole as well. Maybe even put in a higher grade Precision pickup/wiring harness, pots and Precision knobs

That's almost exactly what I'm thinking of doing. I'll be having a custom pick guard made for the modded contour and I've been visualizing having it run down almost to the bridge. I'll leave the J cavity and cover it with the guard. I can see wanting something in the J position in the future so this would leave it all ready when/if I do.
