Squier Jazz Vintage Modified Natural Finish

Hi, new thread... I’ve been keeping an eye open for second-hand Squier Vintage Modified Jazz basses. During my dips in and out of the usual possible sources, I’ve begun to notice a bit of a trend, namely that the sections of wood used to make the natural finish bodies can be very different in colour tone and shade, with an obvious seam between the two sections. Has anyone else noticed this, or are the ones I’ve been seeing not representative of most?

I had one for a brief time, my favorite bass so far I’ve ever had. Most bodies are 4 or 5 pieces. They try and match as best they can. Upgrade pickups and the electronics and you’ll be good to go.

I guess maybe it’s to be expected that body sections might not match particularly well, given the price. Was yours a natural finish and, if so, did the sections match well? I’m trying to ascertain if the attached pictures of the ones I have seen (among others) are typical of the Squier natural finish or not.

Sometimes you can get lucky and get a 2-piece body. Most are 3-piece.
My 2-piece has very well matched halves.

Yours looks gorgeous. Oddly enough, most of the Squier 5-bangers I’ve seen in natural finish do seem to have better-matched body sections that the 4-string natural finishes. Probably just coincidence.

I've seen some boringly plain ones, some fairly decent ones, and some with very nice grain patterns...with very good matches.
Last year I saw one with one of the nicest grain patterns I've ever seen, on the left half, anyway...the right half was such a bad match that it could be spotted at 10 paces.

I agree. I bought a body from one on Reverb and it is really nice and very well matched. Looks almost like a one piece body. I had bought it to paint but cant bring myself to do it because it looks so nice.

I have a Frankenjazz that I love built from a Squier Jazz body, 2 piece, pretty well matched. Def. a nice platform to start with...I also built a 5 string using a Squier Jazz, also a 2 piece, less figuring, lighter colored (sorry no pics handy)
