Squier PJ special

I had a PJ conundrum a little over a year ago and it came down to 3 CL finds...

The Squier PJ Special
The MIM PJ
The SX PJ


The MIM i was looking at was all botched, so that was an easy pass...

The real fight was between the SX and Squier. I thought they were both VERY impressive and both played VERY nicely... but i ended up going for the SX based on $$$ ($75... c'moooon. Though the Squier was a cool $120), aesthetics (i liked the SX burst/black pg better than the Squier burst/white pg), and feel (SX had a nicer, to me, neck and felt just a biiiit sturdier).

Honestly though, that Squier was awesome and i'm sure PLENTY of people in my possition would have cosen that one over the SX i chose (and still VERY happy with my choice).

About 11 of the ones I've played haven't been 'right'. But the one I've got now is great, except (Don't know if they still sell the version) my version of it (same pups, hardware, etc..) has all chrome hardware, and the stock mirror pickguard to go along with it.

I had not seen it before I got it in my hands from thomann.de, so here are maybe the first pics on the net of a walnut squier special P!

From what I had seen/read on the internet, I thought it would come with matching headstock, but no. I don't like matching headstocks, so no problem!

That's a real nice looking bass. I've been wanting a PJ configuration with traditional looks for some time, and the pictures you posted have helped me decide on this exact bass. I'll be modding the bridge and pickups, which will add another $200 or so to the price. Thanks!

Probably just a Gotoh 201 bridge (maybe a Hipshot or Badass II, though money is tight right now), and DiMarzio Split P/Ultra Jazz pickups. Since I always run tone controls at 10, I'll probably bypass the tone pot altogether to provide a little extra output and take one variable out of the signal. I also put Hipshot D-Tuners on all my E strings, regardless of the bass itself. Basically I'm trying to re-create the modded Jazz Bass Special that I sold 10 years ago (stupid) that is now sold as the Duff McKagan signature model with Seymour Duncan pickups. Imagine my shock when I found that my mid 80's MIJ Jazz Special was selling for $900 base price. :crying:

I have found the DiMarzio pickup configuration to have very, very high output with a "clear" sound-lots of high end sparkle from the Split P and growly lows from the Ultra Jazz. Most people who played my old bass thought I upgraded to active electronics and were really surprised to find out it was still 100% passive. Those two particular DiMarzios are quite loud.

If I get a wild hair up my ass I may even break out the router and stick a DiMarzio Model One pickup right under the neck and run it to a second output à la Billy Sheehan. Or maybe not. That's a long way off.

Perhaps I should actually get my hands on the bass itself before I develop wild schemes to mod the hell out of it. :)
