Squier VM Fretless

Just traded my Fretted VM for VM fretless. Guy never played it, it's pretty much brand new. It's. 2011. Off to fretless land I go.

Yes I put some Dr Hi Beams and just punches thru. Not too bright but right were it should be. I'm really pleased.

(although I'm keeping the fretted herd...Tony Franklin makes it look so damn easy...)

Can anyone confirm if the body is dug up below the control plate? In other words, could I remove the control plate and leave only the knobs? The bass would look much better.

There aren't really any basses that have a pg/control cover over finished wood over a bottom routed control cavity. If there's a control plate, you can assume it's routed out underneath.

I came across one with moderate to somewhat deep grooves in the fingerboard primarily from the 3rd to 7th frets. Does it affect playability at all? It's not very deep, but it's there.

Hope you have better luck with yours than I did with mine! The one I got new from MF was absolutely horrible. The fretboard was so un-even it was impossible to keep it from buzzing either on the top end or bottom end of the neck. Even shimming the neck did not help. The action would have to be so high, it would be un-playable. Than the finish looked like it was done by a monkey. And it just sounded out right bad. For the extra money, the Fender Standard Fretless is far superior.

I was really surprised, the VM Fretless seems very well liked which is why I got one. And previous Squier basses I have played recently were all really nice playing and sound basses. So maybe the VM I got was built by a new guy in the factory!
