Honestly, it's like comparing an apple to a bicycle.
They're nothing alike, and for overall general use, the standard P would probably win by a country mile.
That said, I utterly love my VM-TB, there's not much out there that does what it does with such a sweet neck. It sounds huge, it feels great, and it's both light and well balanced, I have a set of GHS tapewounds on mine. Thick punch. A regular player besides an(IMO) tasty collection of high end and boutique basses.
If you're up for modding, the stock pickup is 4 conductor, so you can easily install a toggle switch, for series/single, series/parallel, or even series/single/parallel, I done this to mine, and it leads to a few nice options, especially single, which will cut the boom back a nice bit, getting closer to more standard bass tone.
