Squier vs. Squire

I read the book by Forrest White. "Fender - the Inside Story"

In the book he talks of the SquiRE string company that Fender bought to make his strings. The word Squire appears a few times. I don't think it was spelled SquiER even once in the book.

Did someone "correct" his spelling?

Or...did Fender change the name at some point?

White misspelled it.
Squier is indeed the correct spelling. Squier was the name (Mr. V. C. Squier) of the founder of the company way back when (late 1800's I think) which made strings for different stringed instruments like violins, banjos, guitars etc. Fender later bought the company (1980's?) to have their own string making company, and later gave the name to their budget instrument division. It's always been spelled Squier, as that was how the man's name was spelled. Period.

That does indeed happen, but there are plenty of others that don't bother with spell-check, and they still get it wrong, even when they own a Sqiuer and have the proper spelling staring them in the face. I've even seen a few claim that "Squire is the proper spelling, Fender got it wrong."

On the Rush website, that Clockwork Angels bass is spelled Squire. I guess it's sort of like, "What is this Squire that you speak of? We only touch instruments that cost thousands of dollars!"
