Big fan of Fender Super 55s. I have them in a Fender MIM Jazz bass and I am really happy with their sound. Using stainless steel round wound strings may also help you get a little more output.

If you get too close to the strings it will put a strong pull on them and they will sound warbly or it will affect intonation and tuning. If that happens just back off on them a little at a time until it returns to normal.

put some reasonably priced pups in there ... Duncans , Basslines , Super 55 , ... stacked , split coils or any noiseless pups ... that way you can blend the pickups however you want without the noise of single coil pups .. if you always run both volumes wide open ... then single coils would have a more aggressive sound ..

buy used ... !!! then you can try a few out and not loose your shirt on them .. !!
