Double Bass Squish sound problem!

Here’s an issue I have never encountered before. It is unique to my playing on the TB10, and in fact unique to just the past couple days. But given the parameters, I imagine it’s something upright players might have encountered.

I’m doing my best over the past couple days to begin to play the instrument exactly like an upright. Same hand positions and motions. (and I’m not using the piezo pickup, I’m using only a mic for amplification.) The problem? When I lift my first finger from a sounding string, it does not just mute. The sound almost goes ‘squish’ or ‘bweeet’, or really a combo of those two sounds together. It does not occur with middle ring or pinky fingers; it happens only with the index finger.

I’m presuming, of course, that due to the change in technique I’m not lifting the index finger quickly enough - and so the note is buzzing as I lift slowly. My questions: has anyone here encountered that sound before? And how do we simultaneously lift the finger AND mute the string without getting that sound? Is it just simply practicing a correct technique enough so it becomes ingrained?

I figured it out. It occurs when I’m (erroneously) using the pad of my finger too much, and my first knuckle becomes a reflex angle. It’s not possible to lift it from there quickly enough to avoid that sound.

Solution? I have to be conscious to utilize my fingertips, and keep my fingers curved toward the fingerboard.

I also notice it occurs far more in the first five positions. So it’s about the action height.... technique is the answer.
