SR506 Dean edge 6

Hello Everyone,
Would the SR506 be a major improvement over a Korean Made Dean Edge 6?
Or do I need to climb further up the ladder to realize an appreciable difference?
Thanks
Depending on specific models and model years they could be from the same factory. There’s definitely a few similarities as well as differences.

Which specific Dean Edge 6?

Some are based on Edge 4
Some on Edge 1
Earlier ones had quilt maple tops
Some were all basswood
Some were active with EMG-HZ
Some were active with EMG-CS
some were active with DMT
One of there newer inexpensive 6 stringers is passive and less than $300

I own basses made by both Dean and Ibanez. Dean doesn’t get much love here at TB although I do love them as well as Ibanez.
I love Dean necks. Narrow and thin and usually thin satin finish.

I think Deans are vastly underrated.

Ibanez’ seem to come with a more varied selection of pups.

My best advice would be to try before you buy.

also depending on model year they could be from the same country of manufacturer.

Dean has utilized factories in Korea and Indonesia just as Ibanez has done, though most Ibanez basses that are not made in Japan are actually made by Cor-Tek aka Cort.

Thats a Dean Edge 6 which has the Dean preamp and passive Dean DMT pups and basswood body

Any chance you can show the S/N?

The Dean Edge Q6 has EMG-HZ and usually a Dean preamp but sometimes surprisingly an actual EMG preamp on the earlier models basswood body with quilt maple top.

The SR506 in this case is probably the better of the two, but again I have to say try before you buy.

Both have a ‘modern’ tone.

@Killed_by_Death can tell you more about the SR506

Serial number came off when I repaired the headstock. It has a battery so I assumed it was active.
Since I own this bass just trying to decide if a 506 is a significant step up or not.View attachment 3839388View attachment 3839388
Active with passive pups

the S/N would have indicated factory and year
E for World factory Korea
US for Un Sung factory Korea

many epiphone basses and guitars were made at the World factory Korea up to 2004.

I wouldn’t say it was a huge leap but assuming since the Ibanez you’re thinking of doesn’t have a repaired headstock it would be an improvement.

I decided since I only have $130 in this Bass including strings, I will keep it. I have done a lot of work on this bass and I think the neck is actually quite nice albeit not pretty and very easy to play. I have the relief set at .012 and the string height 7/64. Not sure what else you could want in a neck. Anyway I am very good at repairing the structural parts of a bass, but clueless when it comes to the electronics. If I was going to take my time and upgrade this Bass, using used parts, what should I look for as far as pickups or preamp. I will probably upgrade the hardware if I find good deals.

In my amateur hands the difference between this bass and a $1000 bass probably would not be that noticeable.

Just wondering what those black dots are on the headstock? Are those rods or dowels to reinforce the headstock?

depending on narrowness of string spacing either this:

From $114.00
or these:

Rating:
100%

onward

I'm guessing it will be the 40PX because Deans usually have narrower string spacing though it's better to measure twice and buy once.

Narrow 6 string soapbar X series bass pickup featuring ceramic magnets
@NicJimBass could definitely help you along further.

Not sure if this is going to help, my Q6, I have the EMG-HZ pickups. They measure 4.5" by 1.5 inches. So I'm thinking something in the 45xx family.

EDIT: Took out a pickup and it's labeled EMG45HZ.

LATER EDIT: If you take out the pickup, move away the foam and unplug the connector there you should see the label of the pickup.

aguilar tone monster preamp

Thanks
Yes, since I already had the Dean I have decided to hold out for something nicer. I guess the question is which bass or at what price point do I see a noticeable difference in quality and playability that is commensurate with the price. Not just expensive ginger bread trimming that adds nothing to the playability.
