Stagg?

Hey, so i teach this 14 year old guy how to play bass and he's been saving up for a while for a bass. He called me today to tell me that he picked up a Stagg bass and he loves it.
I know stagg just went belly-up but does anyone know anything about the basses they made? I know the fact that he loves it is #1, but i just want to get a feel for what to expect.

Local shop has a few of them. One jaguar-style, two stingray- style. Not bad in the fit and finish department. All need a set up, but they all feel pretty good to the hand while playing.

Jag-style has two humbuckers--sort of like G&L L2000, but it is a passive bass. Output on these basses seems a bit low and not a ton of tonal variation (but I'm used to messing about on my Tribute L2500.)

I wouldn't be afraid to buy any of them; they would make excellent platforms for modding.

If the kid is happy with it...don't rain on his parade. They are a perfectly useable bass instrument.

Just for clarification, Stagg is far from out of business.....it's really just a brand name anyway. The company behind it, EMD, is quite large:

emdmusic the company that is Stagg, just picked up the contract to distribute Ashdown in the U.S. along with a few other well known companies...

Their rep came in to my local mom and pop while i was there the other day..

Stagg used to supply parts to other manufacturers as i understand it....and then finally launched their own line...

apparently they are trying to step up their game...and according to the catalog he left behind, several price points....i checked out a couple of samples the rep brought in....and i would put them on par with the Samick/Greg Bennet stuff the store already carries for entry level purchases....

I own one. They are very similar to SX basses: very cheap and a good modding platform.

I've bought a discounted fretless for $100 - it's nut was literally sharp, pots not screwed to the body, the bridge pup buzzing and the fretboard not that straight in the lower positions. In several hours of work and no furter $ invested it was playable and sounded just fine, with an exceptionally good P-bass sound. A new bridge and pups would make a beast out of it.

IMO, you should check your student's bass, do a set-up. If it's still really bad advise your student to get it shielded, frets leveled...

My local shop has LOTS of Stagg basses. I've got a pretty good relationship with the owner, so I've talked to him a lot. He LOVES the Stagg Tele clone and started carrying them because of the Tele. I've played several of the Stagg basses in his store and he and I would frequently jam...

The ones he has are natural oiled finish. The one's I've played have a tremendous finish and the bodies are well made and light weight. Necks were straight and fast. IF I had one, I'd do a lot of fretwork cause the frets were awful, sharp, sprung a bit, and not level. I'd replace the tuners with hipshots, and I'd replace the electronics, because I didn't like the pickups or the pots, etc...

I've had SX and if given the choice of SX or Stagg, I'd probably choose SX, there would be less modding to do to get a good playable bass.... but for the weight, balance and finish I liked the Stagg, I'd just replace everything else.

I have one of their EUB and for the price is tremendous playing bass. I actually prefer it to my old 3/4 size Framus doghouse.
The tone is excellent and a very playable bass.
If he is happy with it and he makes him want to play more then I'd say all is good.

I've got a Stagg BM350. Inexpensive and Chinese-made, but it turned out to be a really decent bass once it got a proper set up.
