This guy played on a bunch of George Benson stuff. I just love his tone on This Masquerade and Breezin', among others. Anybody know what bass he plays and strings he uses. I have done a little looking around the net and see him play J bass alot.

While Stanley Banks was indeed a member of Benson's band and is credited on the Breezin' album, I'm 99.9% certain that the bass on the title track "Breezin' " was played by Phil Upchurch.

"Six To Four"...a very cool tune...Upchurch, also.

Check out "Full Compass" from Bad Benson. Upchurch on EB...another cool tune that serves as a bass etude.

Both written by Upchurch.


Bass Player (a few years ago) did an article/feature on Stanley Banks.

Agreeded Phil played bass on the studio version, however, I'm sure there are plenty of examples of the great Stanley Banks playing that song on live dates. So, I love Phil and Stanley's tone on both versions.

Stanley recorded on the Breezin album also.............He has been on tour with George for over 40 yrs. And has never missed a gig!! They are still going strong....

Stanley plays a MIA Fender Jazz (I played it) he owns a Walter Woods head with (I think) Epifani 2x10 cab....

george benson's autobiography is out and is a fantastic read, mentions stanley a couple times and what a great bassist he is and loyal too (been with him since the 70's). highly recommend the book.

I saw Benson several times in the 70s and 80s with Stanley Banks on bass. Great supportive player with a huge pocket. IIRC he had a different bass each time ranging from a Gibson Grabber, Precision, Ibanez and Jazz. In the gatefold of the Benson 'Weekend in LA' the tiny photo of Stanley shows the headstock of the Gibson Grabber.

btw, this thread reminds me of a game I used to play as a kid, where you combined musicians based on their names rather than their musical compatibility. My favorite most implausible ensemble was:

Peter Banks - guitar
Tony Banks - keyboards
Stanley Banks - bass
Gino Banks - drums
