Starcaster bass pickups - mod from series to parallel?

I acquired a Starcaster bass in the last few days. Fear not, it is one of the new ones and not one of the two '70s prototypes that are still known to exist. I've noticed that the original '70s basses had smaller pickups, whereas Fender incorporated their reissued Wide Range Humbuckers into these reissues.

My bass was second hand and, as such, the output jack was a bit loose and the 3-way selector was a little unreliable, with the neck pickup setting sometimes not giving me full throttle. Likewise the volume pots were a bit scratchy. As I will have the neck off for the next little while as I fix some slight roundwound chew on the frets and give them a good polish, I figured I might as well upgrade the electronics at the same time.

As a rule of thumb I tend to want to see what is under the hood on a new instrument and, with semi-hollows, I love figuring out how they got the wiring harness inside the instrument! I quickly had the three-way switch out the neck pickup route, which is a relief as I was wondering how everything got in the F-holes.

For the record this bass is wired up with 500 k 'Alpha' branded mini pots with 10mm shafts, and 0.033 uF capacitors. The switch is a generic unbranded push-to-break Les Paul-style switch of the sort that are plentiful on Ebay. The wiring scheme is Les Paul style, and in the middle switch setting both volumes can act as a master. A lot of heat shrink tubing was swallowed up wiring this up, which makes everything relatively tidy inside the instrument.

The pickups are another story. Both register 23.3 k on my multimeter. While the DC resitance doesn't tell us much on its own, the pickups are hot and dark! Even with the tone on '10' there is an insistent lower-mids fluffy pillow to the tone, like a fog.

In digging the wiring apart I discovered that both pickups have the series link exposed, and simply hidden behind heat-shrink tubing, where the hookup wires are soldered to the pots. It would be entirely possible to wire the pickups in parallel rather than series, as well as simply short out one pickup coil or have a cunning tone control setup like on a Peavey T40, whereby the tone control also shorts one of the coils incrementally.

I'm thinking of wiring the pickups with the coils in parallel, to retain the hum cancelling capabilities of the pickup, but to open up the top end. Any thoughts, or has anybody done this?

Finally, I'm not convinced everything was better in the old days. I had an original Fender WRHB for a long time. It was microphonic, surprisingly quiet and had a dark mids-heavy presence to the tone. It sounded like a fat, dark P bass pickup. These new pickups are not microphonic, and they've reproduced the design pretty closely as far as I can tell. I've not popped a cover, but given the space between the coils and the DC resistance (the original was 24 k ohms) I imagine these new pickups must be mostly the same as the originals. They even reissued the six chunky cross-head bolts holding the coils onto the baseplate. The backs of these new pickups look the same as the original I had, albeit with evidence of wax potting and an RoHS sticker. The hookup wire is shielded, but has PVC insulation rather than the coax on my original pickup.

Definitely worth a try. You said it was wired like a Les Paul, there are plenty wiring diagrams and mods for that wiring style. You'll just need some push/pull pots.
Didn't the Fender WR pups have 1 meg pots back in the day?
 
Hello ChristoMephisto! I know that 1 meg pots were used in Jazzmasters. Some of the guys on the TDPRI forum have paired WRHBs with 1 meg pots, but it seems a little overkill.

I'm not a fan of push/pull pots, so I'm considering hard-wiring the pickups with the coils in parallel. The bass was wired like a Les Paul from the factory, with each volume control acting as master in the middle switch setting. The solution is to solder the pickups to the wiper of the pots rather than an outer lug, which should give me a wider range of tones in the middle setting.
 
I have a Squier Tele Bass with the WRHB. I put a push/pull on the tone to give me series/parallel. The parallel setting is much more open, bright and a little lower in volume. It matches up to my other basses better in parallel.

Hello! The pickup on your bass looks a lot like what is on mine. Is there any down side, you feel, to having the pickup in parallel? Any uneven response across the strings or other unpleasant quirk? Any loss of bass response?

Also, do you happen to have a clip of the bass with the pickup in both series and parallel?

I have one of these same pickups in my P-bass in the neck position, Billy Sheehan style. I really dig the sounds I can get with it, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who fiddled with modding these pickups for dual sound

Any chance I could get a schematic of this? Or any for parallel swicthing? I really like the series layout in a full band setting, but more versatility is never a bad thing in my book.

No need to apologise man, its my thread and I'm glad to see somebody is getting some traction out of it.

From memory, the Starcaster/Tele bass WRHB pickup had the series link between the two pickup coils hidden under heatshrink tubing at the end of the hookup cable that is soldered to the pots. You need to work out which of the wires belongs to which coil of the pickup. The red and white wires are from different coils, so you could start from there and simply work out which wiring pair represents the start/end of each coil using a resistance meter.



Then wire it like this following the Seymour Duncan scheme for the white/red wires:

I don't have a gut shot of my bass as it's a dozen+ screws to get to it. I remember the green being hot, black ground and red and white being the series connection. I sussed it out with a multimeter and discovered the proper wiring is opposite the Seymour duncan wiring code as it's black hot, green ground. The white wire is the (-) associated with the green (+) for one coil, the black is (-) and red (+) for the other coil. The bare wire is the cover ground.
To keep the overall phasing proper for the Squier, wire it just like the Duncan diagram as mentioned, but reverse the output polarity: send the (+) out from the green wire tab and the (-) out from the black wire tab.

Oh, and while you are at it, if you are installing a push/pull tone pot (like I did), might as well switch out the jack and volume pot, too. The stock are fine and usable, but I used a nicer CTS 1 Meg audio for volume and a Bournes 500K audio push/pull for tone (.022uF cap) and a Switchcraft jack. It's worth the $20 spent to have quality parts in there.

I just ordered some dpdt pots for the switching. Another original pot broke. I bought it refurbed so I think they replaced all pots with very sub-par components. However, they are not mini pots. Can I pull through the pickup cavity route fine, or is the only entrance through the F hole? I seriously doubt I can fit a standard sized push/pull through the F hole and I couldn't find any minis. (Although, in the picture, the body certainly looks smaller than a standard sized pot...)

They are Bourne 500k audio taper push/pull pots. I have really enjoyed all Bourne pots I have used.
 
Also, the diagram I posted above varies from the one @Axstar posted. I'm assuming the axstar diagram for the dpdt is the one I should use, only switching the green and black......correct? I don't have a multimeter and don't wanna pull apart twice, so I really wanna get it right the first time.
 
It looks like it splits the coils of each humbucker rather than does series/parallel. Is that what you are after?

Black spray paint makes everything look legit.
The pickups hook up to the dpdt the same as the the diagram you posted above from Seymour Duncan, just the green and black are swapped due to @bigtone23 stating the fender was different in that regard to the SD schematic. There was a different wiring off of the SD site, but i changed it to match what you posted, and what I saw on other schematics. Perhaps many ways to skin a cat?
 
Disassembled yesterday. Not too bad a process. Cleared out some space in the bridge pickup cavity for the larger pots to feed through. Feeling the weight of the pickups and bridge is showing me why this bass weighs so much. They are not ultralite gear! My cloth covered wire should be in today. Push/pull bourns in tomorrow. I think reassembly will be the longest part. I am excited to get some reliable electronics in this thing, and very eager for the parallel setting. Amazing how much higher quality these bourns are from what came in it. Much more substantial design. Made my template for the controls in an effort to clean up and improve my soldering jobs. Eager to report back when it's all done!
