Hi all,

Thanks for helping me get the recording process up and running. I have put together a youtube video and have been making recordings because of your valuable input.

I have a problem. Whenever I record, I get this white noise type of static that hovers noticeably in the background. I tried using gates to suppress it, but I think a better idea would be to not record with it in the first place.

It's just a hiss that's got to go. I'm not eq'ing to boost the highs either.

My setup: Scarlet Focusrite 2i2. Ableton Live 9. The direct out from the Aguilar TH 500 directly into the Focusrite.

Do any of you have any idea, or have any experience with this sort of annoying static white noise?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks everybody!

Do you hear it if you plug the bass straight into the Scarlet?

If you're going DI out of the TH, you need a quality XLR cable. This is one place where cables make a difference. My WAG is this is where the noise is coming from, but that's just speculation at this point.

I'm traveling now so I can't say for sure, but I think the issue may be playing at a very low volume and boosting the gain on the interface. High gain and low volume means lots of noise right? The xlr I use is mogami so it should be ok I think.

It could be a gain staging issue. Bass volume should be at max, perhaps rolled back a small amount if you have a powerful preamp. You might be able to tweak the gain, to get it to go away, e.g. raise the gain on the TH500, lower the gain on the Scarlett, or vice-versa. Are you seeing a full signal in Ableton Live?

Do you hear it with other instruments?
Do you hear it with another instrument cable?
Do you hear it when monitoring via headphones from the Scarlett?
Do you hear it when plugging the bass directly into the Scarlett?
Does changing the PRE/POST on the TH500 change the sound?
Does changing the Ground Lift on the TH500 change the sound?
Does changing other settings on the TH500 change the sound (e.g. Drive, EQ)?
