Yeah, Chuck Rainey did the original. If you look up "The Making of Aja" and "Peg" on Youtube, you can find an interview with Rainey about the song that's pretty cool.
The story goes that during the chorus of the song, Mr.Rainey, suggested to Fagen and Becker, that a slapping'n'popping bass line "would be really grooving".Mr.Fagen and Mr.Becker stood firm and said,"None of that junk on our records."Chuck played three takes on this song.On one of the takes,he turned his back towards the booth so they couldn't see him playing.It was that take that they picked.Guess what he was doing during the chorus on THAT take?

Great story..... LOVE Steely Dan.....Aja was there best album in my opinion. Chuck Rainey has said in a BP article that Aja and Gaucho are his favorite SD albums.

If I recall, that was one of the BEST sounding shows I've heard there and it pretty much was the best live bass tone I think I ever heard at ANY large concert.

Great player, i have a live Steely Dan CD from the 90's and he sounded great there too, he used a SR5 on that song.

Yeah, I prefer all the albums up TO Aja - But I got sick of hearing that album over... and over ... and over when I was a senior in highschool and you couldn't escape it.
Give me Katy/countdown/royal scam any day
