Steinberger Synapse 4-strings - Strings don't fit!!!

I use Ken Smith double ball strings on my Hohner headless. Nice strings, but unfortunately they don't fit my Synapse.
I just bought a Synapse 5 string bass used. From this thread, it seems like the bass originally came with a set of adapters for use with single ball strings? Am I interpreting that correctly? I didn't get any extra adapters so I'm wondering if I should go back to my seller and see if he has them.
AFAIK, there were separate adapter bits made for the original Steinbergers, but this is not true for the Synapse - I have 2 - one bought new. There were no separate adapter parts.
Instead, at the headstock, there is a clamping bar much like a Floyd Rose-style locking nut.
So you either use double-ball strings, or you use regular strings and clamp them at the headstock.
The one I bought new has the original double-ball strings in place, but the one I bought used has conventional strings using the "locking nut" method. Both work fine...
For what it's worth anyone finding this thread, I just restrung my 4-string Synapse with stock D'Addario ESXL170 light gauge double ball 4 string set.
The D string required a little help from a small screwdriver to drop into the saddle, but it was an otherwise straightforward process *except* when I somehow unscrewed one of the saddles and ended up having to disassemble the entire bridge assembly to fix that requiring multiple hex wrenches and 3 different sizes of screwdriver. Gah.
