Steinberger XL2 Question

I own a first year issue (1983) Steinberger XL2 bass guitar. Sometimes when I am playing, if I touch the strings and walk around, it picks up and amplifies static electricity through my amp as clicking noises as I move my feet. Has anybody ever had that happen with their bass and, if so, how did you remedy the problem?

I know the static electricty problem has something to do with the Steinberger and not the amp since it has happened with a couple different amps, both solid state and tube. I do not get static issues at all venues, which leads me to think it might also have something to do with the wiring in the building electrical circuits but I am not quite sure. I asked a local guitar tech but he never heard of static electricity issues like this. I had to rub anti-static dryer sheets on the bottom of my shoes at one gig because it was so bad.
