Still needing help with preamp questions.

This really looks like a cool option with more eq options. Wondering if it will provide that tube warmth.
No, not really. The Magellan is a very clean, very flexible unit with a great EQ and filter section (including controls reminiscent of the Markbass VLE and VPF filters as well as an HPF). It's very well-built and backed by great support, including the presence of the builders here on Talkbass (also true of Sushibox, of course). No downsides, in my experience with it.

My vote is for the Sushibox Venus Z; Super flexible EQ that is boost and cut, Di, HPF, tubey warmth and goodness. I use one for my mini practice rig in the living room, and it is vastly overqualified for this task. I also own a Nobelium that lives on my main board, and I appreciate the flexibility of the Venus Z, even though the Nobelium sounds outstanding. I've never a/b'ed them however, so I can't speak on the tonal differences. I like 'em both. I am not sure why the Venus Z hasn't caught fire in popularity, honestly.
Good luck!

I use an EBS Microbass 3 for those flexible purposes. I run mine into the effects return of an Ampeg 2x10 combo for playing live, or use the preamp on its own for recording or IEM rehearsals. I sometimes get to run the EBS into a Markbass rig at the rehearsal space for one of my bands. In my experience it offers an alternate voice to the Markbass stuff but with a familiar tightness and clarity that both brands are known for

Are these legit goals for a preamp and what would be the best option? I think something like the Sushibox Neptunium would be cool but I’m new to this crazy preamp business. Would the Neptunium cover all that…warmth, preamp, amp backup for non-amp gigs, etc?

I just took the tube plunge and got the cheapest sushi box 12ax7 I could find. Got the Underground Accelerator. Oh man I think you'd be happy with any of the tube options before your amp. I have a MB r500 and it works well for growly tones. Anything I put the sushi box pedal in front of gives me all the warmth and bottom end I currently desire. Sound great with my Magellan 800 as well. Makes my '75 P really sing!

Cool. That sounds great. Just ordered the Neptunium. So looking forward to taking it for a spin.

Oh man! jumped straight to the main deal! Hope ya love it! I think I'm set on tubey goodness for awhile! Other than the warmth I forget my Underground Accelerator is technically a fuzz too. Gets some nice breakup with added gain (like gain at 11am lol)

For situation 1 and 2 you would probably want a separate IR Cab sim loader pedal/device, beside the preamp, or a preamp with some sort of cab emulation build in, IR based or not (IR capability would allow for more versatility and tailoring to your specific needs and taste), that gives can be turned off when using the preamp with your amp and cab.

A separate IR Cab Sim loader would give the greatest versatility and result I think, and would probably be what I would do.

Or get something like the "Two Notes Opus" DI, Amp & Cab Sim (all in one solution, sounds amazing, and very affordable for what you actually get).
