stingray 5s (no Sterlings please)

I think there may be some confusion as to when what came out.

The original stingrays (1 pickup/ 2 band eq preamp) were introduced in 1976. However this model was changed to a 3band equal preamp. The original Sterling was a beta tester before the stingray was released.

The original stingray 5 (1 pickup/ 3 way pickup switch/ 3 band eq preamp) was introduced. However in 2005 this model was changed to add two optional confiquarations (hh & hs).

As for Sterling goes it is merely nothing more than a budget line.

And I think we all know what budget line means, don't we?

Although the names have changed over the years the models have basically stayed the same. In the early 2000s Ernie ball came up with a budget line for music man called s.u.b. Due to rising production costs it was discontinued in 2007. After s.u.b. official licensed product (olp) became the budget line. However olp has been retired as of 2009. Since the the retirement of olp there has been Sterling.

Now as for some of the comments I have made, it's nothing personal. I'm an experienced bassist and I only demand the best from my instruments.

It's not a matter of offending anyone, it's a matter of forum rules. I believe there was another post or at least a reply that was edited because they were trashing a particular bass in this manner (ie. "Such and such sucks" vs. "I don't like this, and here is why:"

You didn't mention that in your original post. Everyone here has been replying as if you were talking about Music Man StingRays & Music Man Sterlings, not Sterling by Music Man. They're 2 different things.

i thought they were pretty good. if not maybe better. to be fair i think if you were a sereous musician they you would play what the hell you wanted regardless of price or name.

Sterlings have ceramic pickups that are wired series don't they? With switching options? Is that how the first stingray 5s were released?

The original stingray 5s had a 3-way pickup switch. The hh and he models have a 5-way switch.

I'm confused, do you think the Sterling By Music Man basses suck, or the Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling basses?

One thing that I've taken from this thread is that Ernie Ball Music Man makes a lot of weird and confusing naming choices.

For example, is there a Sterling version of the Sterling?

Yes there is a sterling version of the sterling. I think it's called the sb14.

I was hoping to get more out of this thread. I own a MM Sterling and it is by far the best sounding, easiest playing bass I've ever owned. (multiple Ibanez Soundgear, USA Fender, Warwick, and Fernandes). It seems to me that calling these "shaved-down" designs should have been called something other than Sterling to avoid confusion...and this thread went to crap because of it

I had both Sterling(2004) & Stingray(1998) for the last couple years. First I got Sterling. That time I mainly used picks and I can tell that it rocked! At the same time Stingrays didn't sound "right" for me with picks. Then I switched bands, and had to play fingers only. When I tried Stingray with fingers I fell in love with it right away! So, I'd say that :
Stingray - fingers
Sterling - picks
P-Bass - BOTH!!! Haha
