I was gigging outdoors last week with this equipment: OLP Tony Levin Signature 5'er (Seymour Duncan Pre-amp with stock PU), Eden Nemesis NA320 Head, Avatar 1-12 and 2-10 cabinets. Top line cables all around. I had the amp Gain set up to just getting the redlight on the heavy notes (proper setup per EDEN), and volume at about 12 to 1 oclock. EQ set mostly flat with some mid scoop.
I walked up to the amp to adjust and as I got up close, the system gave me a high pitch squeal/feedback. If I turned the GAIN down, it went away. Also, the feedback seemed to be aggravated by the OLP's treble EQ adjustment (if i dialed down the treble it also lessened the feedback). Once I stood a foot or two back, it would disappear and I could play at that set volume or more.
The strings were muted by my hands and I'm left wondering what that was all about. Happened the next night too. It's not often the bass player gets blamed for feedback, but I was in the dog house for a minute there.
