Strap button felts

Does anyone know where I can buy a few of those little pieces of felt that go in between your strap button and your bass? I have been looking everywhere!

No reason that you can't just get a piece of felt from a fabric shop and cut one out. I don't see why any special felt would be needed.

Really? The first ten or so hits when I searched for "strap button felt washer" in Google provided me with a number of places from which I could buy them.

Heck, just to to the Dollar Store. They always have felt for putting on the bottom of things. And it's only a $1.00......

Got them in black or white there, $1 a pair - you'll need to make the order up to the minimum value with some other bits and pieces though.

Warwick uses small rubber o-rings and it looks good.

Good question. I have no idea either. My SX has them but my Washburn doesn't.

I always assumed the felt washers are used to prevent the metal strap button from scratching the lovely paint.

No doubt rubber washers (like those you'd find in faucets) work just as well and look better.

I woulnd't use rubber on vintage or nitro-finish basses I suspect removal would pull out some of the finish. Felt is a better choice to avoid damaging the finish. Warwick has oil finishes (right?) so the rubber wouldn't matter.

Just a guess, but I would think it keeps the button from "digging in" when it is tightened.

Sure, tighten a peice of metal into a soft finish and eventually it will sink in and damage the finish. I tend to think the felt pads are today just a reference to the early days of fender when they were more practical. I suppose it's possible to crack a modern fender poly finsh, but you would really have to try.

The felts do protect the finish and they also fill the little void created when the flat bottom of the strap button sits against the curved surface of the wood. They are kind of a vintage thing but I think they look cool and I use them on my basses. I also use the little rubber piece that sits under the neck plate because I think it looks cool too and adds a finished look to the bass.
