tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants are all members of the "nightshade" family. what makes a fruit a berry, botanically speaking, has to do with what part of the flower it grows from. it gets waaay nit-picky. i think eggplants and tomatoes are berries cause they come from one flower's ovary and contain the seeds.
