i posted this in another thread, but think it applies here too...i tried these cleaning cloths that seem to work well to refresh strings and bring back new tone. Not sure what they'd do for rust, but could be worth a shot, they worked well on my dead strings...

I play my bass a few hours a day. Before installing ftatwounds, I had to change strings after one or two months. They just kind of died, one string more than the other. Flatwounds, however tend to live much longer. It depends on personal preferences and how you take care of them. Wipe the strings after playing with a clean cloth. This removes agressive sweat and other dirt. They'll just live longer.
