I have a Warwick Streamer 1 (5 string) and am looking to bring out growl as much as I can, understanding that technique is also involved. Reading about this subject on the forum, I see that a lot of players use DR Low Riders or black beauties. I have also read that these two styles of DRs have specific purposes, but I don't know what these are. I have seen some tend to like Elixers as well, but from what I have read, it seems the DRs are very popular for actual players. It's funny how actual player preference is different than "top 5 bass strings" blog post recommendations. I play metal / hard rock. Any recommendations for this would be appreciated. Understanding string construction and best use is something I am just starting to educate myself on. If a good primer exists on this on the site, please direct me that way. Thanks!

I've used both the Stainless Steel Lo-Riders and the Nickel Lo-Riders in the past and liked them. SSLRs are probably the smoothest in surface texture out of all SS rounds I've tried and NLRs are the smoothest of all NPS rounds I've tried. Being hex core, they both have a punchy low-mid presence, and some growl, although their overall tonal characters are more neutral and "refined" than the EB Cobalt Rounds I mentioned above, which have a fairly aggressive midrange character.
As for the BBs, I have no personal experience with them as I don't care for coated strings in general or round-core strings by DR, which are a little too flexible and loose-feeling for my taste. I would say their main appeal is the cool factor for being black. That's all I have to say.
