Double Bass String lenght

I've recently bought a reasonable priced 3/4 german db. Partly because it has got a perfect D neck. The problem is that the string lenght is much longer, than on my old bass and much to my surprice I find it hard to play in tune. (I'm used to play all kinds of different basses on jam sessions though)
Does anyone have some experience on this matter?
How long did it take you to get used to another string lenght, when changing bass?

I've got a 7/8 German in my arsenal which is 43-1/4. It is a little tougher in the high neck positions, but overall you hardly notice the difference. I put this down to an excellent setup. Low soft action and a nice neck shape which isn't too thick at the heel. I've played other large long-action basses which weren't nearly so comfortable, so I think a big component is setup.
