Lots of good info here. I have been using adhesive weather stripping. . . . I fold it so that the adhesive sticks to itself (doubling the thickness) and it about the right thickness to fit between the strings and bridge. gives me a nice thump with the round and flat wound basses.

The red ribbon on the Ibanez SRX700 is a strip of felt I cut off a sheet of felt from Ben Franklin Crafts here. The blue on the old P-bass is the surgical boot foam. Since I play with a mute 99% of the time I just leave these elcheapo solutions on the basses all the time.
