This one is gonna be my main player. Would tapewounds be too dark and thumpy to cut through in a cover band? Typical classic rock mostly/modern/bar band kinda material. I'm really not a fan of roundwounds in general. Any thoughts/suggestions/experiences?

If you don't like roundwounds, you might consider a brighter flatwound like Chromes. It's hard to say universally whether or not tapes will be too dark or thumpy without hearing them through those passive humbuckers. Flats for classic rock are yummy.

I'd have thought tapes would be bright enough, but then again it's always going to be a subjective thing. For what it's worth, I'm really happy with Pyramid Black tapes on my Carvin LB75.

Most tapewounds are about the same brightness, except for the Rotosound ones - they're probably the least bright tapes you can get. (I actually really like that about them, but they may not be what you're looking for.)

If sound wasn't a factor, which it obviously is, I'd have tapes on all my basses.
