These two basses sound radically different.
That's kinda totally to be expected when A/B-ing ply vs. carved basses.
yeah, obviously they're completely different basses. the point of A/Bing them was to give a point of referance mostly of my audio quality. the difference between an inexpensive ply and this bass is very telling in this situation i think. it could also be a referance point since i think most of us have played a shen 80 at some point.
now that i've tinkered with strings, taking tension off the top, ext, id suspect that with the post adjusted, and if i put a lighter tension set of jazz strings on there, it would probably work. i agree that a new bass after a few weeks of heavy playing has settled into "its voice," and that changes made to it will all be subtle. but, several subtle changes can add up.
i do like zyex strings very much on my old german bass. i have a suspicion this bass will respond well to less tension. i may try zyex lights, perhaps for the A D and G, and i'll just keep the mittel E.
