Strings For Fretless

I used roundwounds (Rotosound 66) for years loved them in the lower positions, lots of growl and presence, but hated them in the upper registers too much zing for the way I pluck. I've been using tapewounds (first Rotos, then LaBellas) for the past seven years and love them. I was surprised at how bright an lively they are. I expected they would be deader than flats, but they actually fall in between flats and rounds.

Heard great things about D'Addario Chromes and tried them for four months, loved them the first month and spent the next three stewing about what to do next. I had a set of Fender 7150s that had already been on another bass for about two years, figuring they were about as broken in as strings could be I put them on the fretless just for giggles and I absolutely love them. I will get a new set soon because two years on a fretted bass left significant impressions where the strings contacted frets.

At this time I have 7150s on my fretted G&L SB-2 and my fretless Tobias Toby Deluxe 4, I have no reason to change.

Is that a purple heart fingerboard?

Do you get any string marks developing on you fingerboard?

I am building my first build as a fretless with a purple heart and am also deciding which strings to try first?

Dohhh!! you already answered all that.

I swear that fingerboard looks purple, but now that I read the reast of the posts and looked at again realized that it is an optical illusion.

Those red strings would look bitching with the purple heart fingerboard I am building. Or maybe the black tapewound would look better. How many players choose their strings to color co-oridnate? :)

My five string fretless currently wears a set of fender 7250-5 lights (.40-.115) which are roundwounds. They are long lasting, have a lot of mwah, and are not terribly expensive.
As for flatwounds I have used D'Addario Chromes with equal success.
The bass came with a set of thier own brand (which at the time were Labella slappers or steps or some such thing), but I was not crazy about the strings.
