Strings for Spector NSCR5

Looks like I'll be keeping the Spector I have for sale,so I need a specific type of string. I can't use a regular .130 B because the windings near the ball end won't fit through the bridge slot. I need a string that is tapered enough near the ball end to get through the slot,but still have the full string diameter over the bridge saddle. Anybody use strings like this?

They don't really make anything like that.

The crimping the string by the ball end may be all you can do.

All of the tapered strings even the shortest ones are going to taper past the saddle.

Have you ever used a tapered string? Why not use them?

Taper core strings are too loose feeling to me. When I got the bass it had a set like I described,but I never found out what they were.

So you have used every taper core B string out there or is that your experience with one specific brand?

It currently has elixirs on it with a tapered .130. Feels looser than any of my 34" scale basses with a non tapered .130. I've tried tapered strings in the past from different companies,and never liked the results. I thought that this bass being a 35" scale would help,but it didn't. Ill keep looking.

Have you tried GHS Progressives? They are tapered, but I find them to have pretty high tension(heavy gauge) from the nickel/iron alloy.

Elixir strings are not the highest tension strings out there even the non-tapered versions. They are pretty flexible strings.

The extra scale length will add about 12% more tension to the string (little more than 4 pounds for a .130 B string).

I would try a different brand.

As Duckwater described above, GHS Progressives are a higher tension string with their special filament core wire. The Nickel/Iron alloy lasts a long time too.

There are many other tapered B strings available...

Dunlop now offers Tapered B-String sets, Fodera, Ken Smith, R.Cocco, Sadowsky, SIT, even Spector strings!

The Progressives look interesting. Which length do I need?

Long-Plus in the Progressives. (38" Winding Ball to Silk).

For that bass I would not use less than 37" winding strings.

I know a few people who order single Low-B's and when they find one they like they go with a set based on that.

So that is always an option too.
