Apologies if this is a well-trodden road, but I have among my bass collection (don't ask) a few instruments that sound clangy - a couple of Glarries and a Johnson MusicMan lookalike. All strung with roundwounds. At the best their tone lacks the bottom I like when I get it from, say, a Squier P with Fender flats played very lightly, and at the worst it can sound a bit like a dustbin lid being hit, however much I adjust the bass and amp controls and gently stroke the strings.
I know some of it's in the right hand technique and I'm working on that, but that's slow in coming and I want to enjoy playing them in the meantime. I'm wondering whether people here can suggest strings that can help me take some of the clang out of the sound and give me some thud.
