Double Bass Strings or endpin replacement?

Strunal 5/35 hybrid with what is I take to be a pretty lackluster 10mm endpin...

I’ve been a fan of Innovation low tension strings, but have been less thrilled with my switch from Super Silvers to RABs.

So... Before ordering another set of Super Silvers, should I instead be looking at other improvements?

A vote for the Super Silvers. I wasn't taken with the RABs either. I don't know that an endpin change is going to make a great deal of difference, but others with more experience may chime in.

Strunal stock endpins are awful. You can find used strings here dirt cheap.

Agreed, definitely the endpin is the weak point on my bass.

I’ve read as much as I could about the possible sound improvements with various endpins, but honestly I remain confused.

Any suggestions for a replacement (graphite?) and an idea of approximate luthier cost for the work?

A few years ago I had an Ulsa 1/2” hollow steel tube with ebony collar installed. Cost me $80 but will be more now, and it should last for decades.

Any competent luthier with a bass endpin reamer should be able to install one. It’s a simple surgery. Refer to the luthier list at Gollihur Music for leads.

In my experience, different endpin materials will change the tone/response. If it's an improvement can only be answered after the fact, depending upon what you're looking for. I'm not sure if a lower end bass would be sensitive to different endpin materials. Before reaming for a new socket, you might try a few different rods in the current one to check for any difference.

Can you elaborate? I have a Strunal ply and a Lidl hybrid.

Sure. I played a 50/4 with a Lidl label for about a year. It was my second bass. One day at rehearsal the set screw failed and the bass came crashing down. Luckily nothing broke. I’ve advised Strunal players to replace the stock endpins ever since.

The basses are plug-ugly but pretty well built, sound decent and can take a very nice setup. But the ironwork? Straight into the bin.
