Strings slapping against the frets.

Hi, I'm having an issue with my bass strings slapping against the frets on my E string and sometimes my A string. I'll give you a little background first, basically I play finger-style punk music, so basically simple fast playing... Only without a pick.

What I find is that when I start playing faster if I pluck a string just that little bit too hard it slaps against the frets, it throws off the consistency of my playing and annoys me. I can fix the problem easily by boosting the lows but that's not the sound Im going for.

Anyway Im buying a new set of strings this week so what would be your adivce for fixing the problem? Higher or lower gauge? Or maybe just messing around with the bridge (which I would have my music store do for me) any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Technique is the main cause of these sorts of problems. Firstly try a lighter touch. Also make sure you are not pushing the strings down or pulling them up with your plucking technique try to pluck parallel to the body.

You can also raise the action up a bit.

I agree with jimmy jam.
But also if it helps, you can try a higher gauge string.
Personally, i sometimes go for that 'fretting' sound but with higher gauge, you get higher tension and less slack to hit frets. It doesnt fix the problem entirely though, its more of a technique and setup issue.
