Strobel MB 80?

Discussion in 'Basses [DB]' started by Missingbullet69, Dec 27, 2014.

  1. Hello all and Greetings to my fellow Bottom Liners,

I'm pretty close to buying a Strobel MB 80 3/4 Plywood bass and wanted to find out what you thought about it before making the final decision. I've tried researching around and found only one thread here and a photo of what might be the same model here and here.

Other than these sources, it's bee hard to find some definitive viewpoints about them.

I know everyone has a lot to do these days, and really appreciate your time and thoughts.

    Thanks much!

Since Marc Piane responded to the thread above and may have seen a Strobel, you should contact him about it.

I believe that is the model i am currently renting. I can't give it much comparison because it is the only bass i've ever played :) I can at least say, as a beginner, it has been treating me well for the past year. You can hear it on the tracks at the link below. First two are unamped ambient, third(Alice) is through a PA w/ realist. Excuse the mistakes...

  5. First of all, WOW - you guys sound amazing! You're a beginner? I must be a n00b then, because I'd love to some day be able to play those songs as good as you did. Nice work!

The Strobel sounds great, amplified or no. Thank you for the advice and if you guys are ever doing a gig in Seattle, let me know.

Me thinks I'm going to get the Strobel. :)

I might be too late, but I've been renting a used one built in 2012 for 9mo now. I'm a self taught newbie, been playing bass since the day I brought this one home, which was 9mo ago. My 9mo $300 trial rental comes due on Mar 21 and is only renewable on a $77/mo basis. The 9mo taught me that I like playing the bass and want to continue, but I don't think $77/mo rental is prudent, so I'm in the market to buy a bass. Would I buy this one, an Eastman Strings Strobel MB80? I don't think so. When I play an A note in 1st position on the G string it sounds ratty, and I think the string is vibrating against the fingerboard, but I've been unable to fix it. It sometimes also happens with the 1st position B note on G; and sometimes also on E note, 1st position D string. But not as reliably as it does on the A note, which is a 100% occurrence. To be fair, I haven't returned it to the music shop and asked if they could fix it; but that's because my rental is almost up anyway.

Here is what I know about this model. Eastman Strings is a Chinese manufacturer. The owner attended Boston U. And the Stroble MB80 is the student model.

Its a very attractive and robust unit, but I think if I was going to purchase I would go for a different model, due to the nasty vibration on those one or two notes.

Well, that is kind of silly. It may need a slight adjustment, nothing to judge a whole class of basses on. These adjustments are common in the DB world, even on the most expensive instruments. Take it to the shop, or independent bass luthier for your own education if nothing else.
