Double Bass Strunal love?

The Strunal above looks exactly like the first bass my parents bought me when I was in high school. The thing was a tank but got me into the Boston Youth Symphony and several all-state orchestras. My hunch (given the economics of the time) was that it was probably laminate or a hybrid.

Strunal 5/35 was my first upright. At the time it carried no sentimental value as it didn't have a hand-carved roaring lion head on the scroll, LED lights blinking off the fingerboard, and so on. But it was a fine bass that taught me a lot about identifying gaps to close to get anywhere near Bottesini, Mozart, Oscar Peterson, et al.

Late to the party here. I’ve had a Kay for a long time and it got destroyed… in my search for a new instrument. I opted for this Czech bass with a shop label inside that I’ve recently come to find out is a Strunal 5/21 in the washed poly finish. I really like it but feel like I don’t really know it yet. The Kay was a big part of my sound that would punch you in the face from across the room, this is a very different animal. It definitely bows much nicer and I’m a fan of the Eb neck. Im running an Oliv blend on it with decent height under the strings.

Last spring I got a new bass after 22 years with my Strunal, it takes time to adjust to a new bass. I still have my Strunal as a back up and for sentimental reasons, it's still a nice sounding bass, but my new to me bass has the sound I've been trying to achive.
