What is the the 'tail' of the string?? Is it the excess string beyond the tuning post that gets cut off?? I base this guess from the following from an email:

English is not the sender's first language so there may be some 'mistranslation' of some such involved. TIA

"Tail" generally means the end of a thing, but from the context it sounds like he's talking about the part that go into the tuning posts.

It refers to the entire length of the tapered (thinner) portion at the tuner end after the full winding ends.

EDIT: By the way, there is no such thing as "stupid questions"; only "stupid answers".

Got it. Yeah, I agree with Gorn: "tail" most likely refers to the section past the tapering point, at the headstock side.
