Subaru WRX

Subarus are great cars. I don't own one but people seem to love the Outback and Crosstrek.

The WRX is plenty cool if that's what you're into, but if I recall Subaru tends to use boxer style engines, which aren't forgiving of maintenance schedules long-term. Take care of it and you should be good to go as far as I know.

I love Subarus. As pie_man_25 stated, take good care of a Boxer engine, and you will have an excellent and reliable car for a very, very long time. If you're going for something with more utilitarian appeal (Subaru's high-point), I'd go for a Forester/Outback, but if you want something quick and fun, go for the WRX.

One piece of information you should consider is that the Subaru WRX is the most speed-ticketed car in America. They can go like hell, and as a consequence have developed a reputation as a bit of a cop magnet. If you go the WRX route and have a bit of a lead foot, be sure to keep your head on a swivel.

I had an O.G. (2003) Subaru WRX for about ten years and 90k miles.

Great car and fun to drive but a bit twitchy in the steering. Great in the rain no matter how hard it was coming down. Not fun at all in bumper-to-bumper stop and go traffic.

Mine was the classic rally blue color and got me my first speeding ticket in 40 years. Not saying I didn't deserve it and I was way overdue. Who knew the CHP radar worked 360 degrees?

I have to say that the car caused me to drive like one of "those guys". Got it a little bit airborne and was sliding it around on a gravel road the first weekend we had it. Wife was not amused... reminding me it was brand new while holding on for dear life.

Sold it when I found a used 2004 Lexus is300 with a manual transmission. Just as fast but much less effort to drive smoothly. That inline 6 cylinder 2-JZ engine is incredible. I've owned many, many cars in my life and this one is a keeper.

I had a (US) First-gen WRX and it was the most fun-to-drive car I've ever owned. I live in the mountains and drive twisty mountain roads daily, and that car was the absolute shizzle. I understand they've only gotten cooler.

Is the WRX one of the models they make that DOESN'T have AWD?

I'm really not too knowledgeable about their whole roster, I've just got a few hours down helping a buddy part together a working outback from two scrapyard purchases, who sadly is currently carless (sold those off in a rushed move) and waiting on the delivery of his scrapyard purchase subaru whose model escapes me at the moment. He really likes subaru.
