Subwoofer query

So I stumble upon a sweet deal on 2 identical small cabs for 12" drivers. Dunno the brand...they may have been home made, but they're pretty well put together and seem solid. One has a Eden driver (checked...yup) the other is empty. The one with the Eden has just enough room that I could add a tweeter or high frequency driver of some kind; though it sounds pretty good as is too. This got me thinking about the Accugroove setup in the Whappo Jr with a 12" woofer and a 12" subwoofer design.

Hmmmmmm......

So, it seems to me if i can find the "right" 12" sub, I could have myself a nice little modular rig. Add another driver and crossover to the one cab; use that on small gigs/whatever. Then for something bigger add the cab with the sub. I've only got $100 into the whole thing anyway, so the whole setup wouldn't set me back too much, and it might actually turn out pretty slick.

I know there are factors like cab size and tuning and whatnot. Unfortunately, I'm not terribly knowledgeable about that sort of thing, but I can take measurements of the cab later if that helps...it's at a club where I do my Sunday night jazz gig right now.

Anyway, thoughts/ideas/suggestions...? TIA

Hi.

My advice is to download WinISD speaker software and see if any of the recommended speakers would work in those cabs.

There's a lot of cabs out there, some good some bad, but I always try to think it's a recycling thing and there's always room for improvement

But the efficiency has me concerned. Also, the impedance is 6 ohms. I'm suing the TF550B which Dave advises going against below 4 ohms total. What would the total load be with this and an 8 ohm cab? I know it's less than 4, but not by a lot I would think. Maybe 3.2?

Dunno...might work...any guys with more knowledge about this kinda stuff have any input?

It works just fine when you load a pair of them into a 45x45x22.5 inch folded horn and then use at least four of those. When it comes to subwoofers you can have them loud or you can have them small. You can't have them loud and small.

3.4 ohms, and it is greatly recommended not going below the rated impedance load.

This got me thinking about the Accugroove setup in the Whappo Jr with a 12" woofer and a 12" subwoofer design.

That's more marketing blurb than reality - the alleged subwoofer is a bass guitar woofer (otherwise it wouldn't work when used as the sole woofer in the Tri-112L) and the other woofer is another woofer that is skewed more towards the midrange - more of a mid-bass driver. Furthermore as both drivers are run fullrange there is nothing like the 4-way split of frequencies suggested going on.

Basically it's like running two different 12" cabs, and as anyone who's tried this will testify it's a question of trial and error as to which works and which doesn't. Think of the 'subwoofer' as something like a Epi NYC112 and the 'woofer' as a Bag End S12-D and you'll see what I mean.
