The other problem to getting a good sound with an upright bass is the sound source. .... the pickup.
What one are you using? Most lower priced pickups need a pre-amp between the bass and the amp. But not all. I use a Wilson for more volume and a David Gage for soft softer gigs. Both work great just different. ..... Keep trying it takes years to find the right one.

Use your body between the amp and your bass. Try positioning yourself so the body of the bass is perpendicular to the amp.
Now I've confused myself. Also putting your amp on a stand or on a chair to avoid the amp vibrating the stage.
