Suggestions for an active 5-string Jazz bass?

I highly recommend checking out Bassmods basses:

They are very affordable, play super well, look and sound incredible. On their website you can choose the pre amp, pickups, and action height(low or medium. They set it up for you before they ship it) of the bass you want. They have some basses built and ready to go, and some of them bare(like the one in the pic below) so they can put in your pre amp/pickups of choice. I don’t know how they get their action so low and straight, but it’s so easy to play. I have one of their 5’s, and it’s honestly the best active jazz bass tone I’ve ever heard. Very musical pre amps, with lots of tone and EQ options. All their basses are for around the $1,500-2,200 dollar range.

I'm with the "'more expensive' doesn't necessarily equal 'the best for you'" crowd. If you already know what physical specs work best for you, try sticking with those ergonomics. And, if it's a passive bass, there are tons of active preamp options out there. Any money left over can go towards cosmetic changes, pickups, strings and maybe even some additional routing, if you need to open up a little more modding room.
