suggestions on effect order

This is why threads like this are kinda pointless;
Putting an octave so far down the chain might reduce it's tracking ability. Putting a compressor before an envelope filter is, for some people, a big no no. Putting ANYTHING in an FX loop sounds terrible to me...
So, yes, you're right, it's all personal choice. Just play around with it until you're happy... and then, a week later when you decide it's crap, play around with it some more. Repeat. Then, in a few months you might be getting close!

This is an excellent point! The best and worst thing about this forum is the one recurring answer that I kep seeing:

As annoying as it might be to get this answer, it's always the right one. People set things up all kinds of ways to get different sounds... It's really up to you.
But to get you started, I'll give 2 suggestions. These are what I would probably do.
1. Comp->Octave->Dr.Q->Bassballs->Flanger->Chorus->Echo
Compressor in front will help octave tracking. Octaves are good to have at the front of the chain to prevent tracking issues due to signal deterioration caused from passing through the circuitry from other pedals...
Dr.Q and bassballs are both envelope pedals, but the Dr. is more subtle. I usually put the more subtle effects before more intense pedals of a similar effect.
Flanger is next because I put modulation pedals right before chorus, which I put right before delay, which I put right before reverb.
2 Another setup option would be pretty much the same thing, but with the compressor at the end. This way, as you change effects, your final signal will be more normalized by the comp. Less variation in dynamics as you change effects.
+1 to niftydog's post. You really do just have to keep playing with things until you like them.

See? There are a million ways to try this. Each order has advantages and disadvantages. Each will yield a different sound.
Take nad's advice. Chill out one night and spend the evening trying out different orders. Remember to keep your arms flailing. This is a key step. It's how we all find the best config.

this is the only logical way to come up with a good effects order.
