I have a V4 jazz bass from him. Feather weight, gorgeous neck and birdseye maple board, the fralin pickups... seriously better than ANY fender bass I have every tried since I started playing around 95'. If you find used ones, theyre a bit cheaper but yea... theres a reason that him and sadowsky get so much for a fender copy.
Sounds like a Ric - with tape wounds and the frets removed...
Yeah - that's sort of sound I'd LOVE drool to have. (It would also be nice to play like him...)

There's something from Jaco about that out there. But I don't think I'm really looking for just that.

When i take out my 2nd mortgage I'll think about it....
I have only one bass right now- a Stringray 4 HS, strung up with GHS pressure wounds, which I love dearly and will not change, no way, no how.
But: Been playing a lot of acoustic jazz material lately, and the Ray is just a bit too heavy and thick on the bottom and doesn't have enough of those nice textured mids that you hear from upright players.
So, I'm looking for a Number 2. I'm not trying to sound like an upright but I'd like to get a little closer, as explained - would be nice if it would be a little lighter than the Ray too, which weighs in at 9.1 lbs.
I prefer a 4, and I'm thinking about these:
- A Standard or A Pro PBass.
- A Standard or A Pro JBass.
- Ric 4003 or 4003s.
- MM Cutlass
- MM Caprice
What do fellow TB'ers suggest? I tend to like more width in the neck than 1.5 - I'm very comfortable with the Ray's neck or a P neck. But if a J gives me the sound I want, that's more important.
(Please no, expensive one-off options or cheapos - I tend to like the brands mentioned.)
P-Bass, flatwound strings, foam stuffed under the strings at the bridge to knock down the sustain, and you're there. And maybe pluck the strings closer to the neck. That's what I've done many times in the past for a faux-upright sound, and it gets the job done. It's not perfect, but it works well in a live setting.

I went to the RIC dealer intent on buying it last September, but alas, someone else already had!
Install flats/tapes, roll off the tone and pluck near the fretboard.

AFAIC, whatever the decision is, it should be fretless.
When they came out with them, I think they were going were going for $4k+.
This is probably the direction I'll take - but will I still have decent mids?
That's why I was thinking about a Ric - those wonderful mids. I figured they can be tamed - that guy did it.
Don't like shorties. Don't like the Birdsong look - I'm seriously old school.
