Suggestions?

Hello everyone. I am new to the forums and have been playing bass for a couple of years, and i am kind of ok i guess. But, as of now, I have a very no-fun bass to play: sounds like poop and the action is like five miles high. I am nt really in an official "band", but me and my freinds like to get together and play some jam music and stuff like that. If any of you guys have any suggestions of a good bass below 700 dollars then any input would be well appreciated. Pref. not a fender jazz or p. bass or something like that (far too cliche).

Thanks!

Aw, but that's no fun, guys! Even so, it is more of an emtional thing: you know the film The Count of Monte Cristo where he would nt let his old lover tell him that she was sorry just because he wanted to keep his anger and get revenge? it's kind of like that.

So you want to do bad unto your old bass, correct?

Well... whatever floats your boat in terms of setting it up, I suppose. I think you should still do it though... then at least you'd have a back up bass if you do start gigging.

Anyway, suggestions for a bass... well, I don't think you should dismiss Fenders. I can understand not liking the feel or the sound, but I mean, they're used so widely for a really good reason, and that's because they're great instruments. But if you really don't want a Fender, then there's a couple other brands you could look into, especially used.

For under $700, you could probably buy a new Schecter, like a Stiletto Elite. My cousin has a 5 string Stiletto Custom, and it's definately a nice bass, especially for the money.

If you buy used though, I've seen Warwicks for like $500 on Craig's List and eBay. You could also look into new Ibanez basses and some Spectors. Just go to Guitar Center or some other store with a wide selection and play as many basses as possible, both in and out of your price range. Then go from there.

yah dont dismiss fenders...i did the same thing when i was like you...shopping...had a pretty good budget, didnt want to get a fender cause everyone used them...
got a warwick instead. dont get me wrong...its a great GREAT bass, but i am going to trade it in for a Fender RI 51 pbass (and mod it with darkstars!)...really i am really lustin after fenders right now...i would honestly recommend you actually PLAY a fender, both a jazz and p, play mim cij mia..play it all...other brands tho...warwick (not a big fan of the rockbasses but a used higher end corvette or so can be had for around 700), Musicman(used...around 7-800)...um Lakland? 44-02s are supposed to be sweet (never played one before...) But do give fenders a look...they really are some pretty sweet instruments....
as per the setup book, I acually need to learn how to do this...(i can change my strings and stuff...but wanna get better...) can you guys recommend some books to me?

I've played and owned a lot of different model basses over my long life and settled on a MIA Jazz so don't dismiss the ole Fender too quickly. However I play my Ibanez SR505 about 40 percent of the time. It was a factory second refurbished like new and I got it on eBay for around $400. Sounds and plays great.
