Suggestoins?

SO, i am going to get a bunch of new pedals to really get a good rig going, and I need some suggestions on what to get. I know what pedals I want I just need some ideas on what brands/models to look out for. I am getting a:
-compressor
-chorus
-overdrive
-wah

now for the criteria, I play rock and funk for the most part with a bit of jazz and reggae in the mix. my budget is about $120 per pedal with some exceptions if it is worth it. also feel free to suggest any other types of pedal you think I might like, and USED IS OK AND EVEN PREFERRED. so thank you for any help.

In your price range (used):

Chorus: Boss CE-5 (used and look for one of the older ((pre-2001)) analog models.

Compressor: BBE Opto Stomp

OD: Way Huge Pork Loin

Wah/filter (so many to choose from, but I'm digging the simplicity and great sound of the Subdecay Proteus right now -- used it's in your price range.)

Not to toot my own sales thread, but: :hiding:

James Lomenzo Hyperdrive (overdrive/distortion)

Its quite good. I'd recommend it, even if I weren't selling it here.
I don't need an overdrive myself, I've found. But if I had a less growly bass, I'd be keeping the effect for sure.

As for chorus, the MXR Analog (or Black Label, same thing) Chorus is pretty good, and $100 new.

I have no first hand advice on compressors under $200 though..

For wah, I've owned a Dunlop 105Q. I enjoyed it, but it was not true bypass, and as such, kinda sucked my tone a bit when disengaged. I traded it for an octaver. Still, an option that many enjoy. You can find em used for less than $100 easy.

Good luck!

Compressor: Compressor Reviews Seriously, there are so many different comps out there that you're going to need to do a bit of research to find out what flavor you want.

Chorus: Not as important as octave, IME; check out the Foxrox Octron, MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, Aguilar Octamizer, and Boss OC-2. If you're dead set on a chorus, then look at MXR's choruses, Hardwire CR7, and if you're feeling fancy and want filet mignon, Analogman Mini- or Bi-Chorus.

OD: Way Huge Pork Loin </bias>. A lot of people really dig the Rusty Box but you could also check out the Catalinbread SFT, Tech21 VT Bass, and others.

Wah/Filter: If you want a wah, the Ibanez Weeping Demon is the way to go. Alternatively, 3leaf Audio and Iron Ether make awesome funky filters. Also check out the MXR Bass Envelope Filter, Subdecay Proteus, Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron, and DOD FX-25b.

+1

All great suggestions. ALSO: search, read, listen. Spend hours on the web and neglect job and wife so they finally bug off and let you do what you really want to do in life: own pedals !

But seriously folks... before buying, read customer reviews and look for bad reviews, just to make sure you see both sides of the coin.

Comp: Markbass compresore, by far the Most in-depth compressor out there, lists of sounds too.

OD: ProCo turbo RAT, a little over your budget ($199) but worth it. Everyone and the uncle has used one, not an OD per say, it's a distortion. But can do OD sounds. The plus side is you don't loose the low end if you dont want to. A good idea is one I got from an interview with CAKE's guitarist. He has it set so that you only get the grit when your really hitting hard, and it only comes in at the high ranges. See: Justin chancellor.

Wah: Morley power fuzz wah, unique sound and two pedals in one. You can turn either off. It's out of production, and rare. But worth it for two reasons. 1: it's analogue. Old school lightbulb and shade stuff. And 2: range. The sweep of that thing is easily two to three times a crybaby of bootsy's stuff. Huuuuuge. Normally made for guitar but people mod em for bass somehow. See: Cliff Burton.

My two cents:

Compressor: Markbass is one of the best ones ($$) but the Aguilar (which I use) does a good job too. I advise you to get a good compressor because lots of them sound like crap.

Chorus: I tried different choruses, I now use one for guitar the Acqua-Chorus, pretty cheap and sounds good. It depends on want you want. I tend to use chorus as a filter (very very low rate, I hate when everything is oscillating). Remember to try choruses for guitar, they can be better than those "designed" for bass.

Overdrive: Everything by T-Rex is very good, specially the bass juice is the best overdrive I've ever tried and I lets you mix with your dry sound. Check out Xotic pedals as well, the BB-preamp is very nice.

I never used a Wah so cannot tell you.

chorus: CEB-3 and CE-5 are very different sounds, you might want to check them out before buying (i didn't and regretted my first choice)

comp: lots of choices. I only have experience with one of them, Aguilar TLC which is I think a little more expensive.

od: for me the SansAmp ProgBDDI works great for getting different tones, from mild tubey to quite aggressive.

wah: Dunlop bass wah always worked for me.

...an alternative to all the above could be something like the Line6 M9..

for OD/fuzz (I dont really get the difference) I'm looking for something extremely strong, anesthesia-like ( I know the song sucks its just a range example) any suggestions? after watching a few demos the WH pork loin couldn't really reach the level of distortion, even at the highest settings. the green rhino sounded like it got a bit closer, imo. but I'm really looking for something with that level of distortion. thanks!
