Hi Guys,

Last year I had some Seymour Duncan Basslines installed (professionally ) in my Fender P-Bass Plus ( PJ Config ). I recently noticed that the magnets and pickup have dropped about a 1/2 centimetre!! The pick-up covers appear to be in the same position they always have been but the rest of it seems to be falling in.

Has anyone had this happen to them??? Do you have any suggestions on what to check??? I'd like to not make a fool of myself at the local guitar shop if possible.

I don't have Fenders any more but ISTR they used some black foam strips as "springs" against which the pickup bodies would be tightened down. And the covers were easily "separatable" from the bodies they enclosed. So it's possible the black foam has dried out or shrunk or lost its springiness and allowed the pickup body to creep down. Pull the strings, pull the pickups, and see what's under there. ISTR you need a #1 Philips but this was almost 30 years ago and that was for a stock Fender pickup.

Other possibility is the SDs float in the cavity and they use suspension springs on the pickup screws, and the potting material in the pickups has dried out and now the coils have fallen away from the covers but this is a total SWAG on my part. Doesn't matter either way, 'cause the pickups have to come out regardless of what the problem is. This is a simple diagnosis, under 5 minutes.
