I'm with both of those guys, could be either... Personally I think the preamp in the 4PRO is the weak link of a fine amp... If you can lay your hands on another preamp... An AMPEG would be the best, plug it into the pre in and see if your final behaves itself.
MY GUESS is it will be just fine... Matter of fact... If you have an active bass, just plug it directly into the channel A in... and see if the crackle is still there as she comes up cold.
CRACKLE you have either power supply or power amp issues, no crackle you know she's got an issue in the preamp and thats a separate board. BOTH Renniw and Jerrold's tests can be run on the preamp even by yourself if you are handy...
DO NOT TRY AND SCREW WITH THE POWER BOARD, even if you are a god in repair work. Its in there tight, things are small and its nowhere for less than a seriously AMPEG experienced tech.
