SVT-4 Pro Problem... PLEASE HELP

This is driving me crazy and I haven't been able to find an answer yet. I need to call Ampeg tomorrow, but I figured I'd try here first (the wait time to get through to Ampeg sucks...)

I recently purchased a used Ampeg 410HLF and a used SVT-4 Pro. I am using speakon to speakon from Bayou Cables.
Here is my problem:

Power Amp B sounds great, it gets very loud and is clean all the way through; Power Amp B seems to work the way it should.

However, Power Amp A and Mono Bridged do not work properly. Neither of these 'channels' can be turned up past 1/5 of the way without a bit of distortion and the Limit light coming on with every note, no matter how soft it is played.

Again, Power Amp B works perfectly, but any ideas why these other 2 do not? Your help is very much appreciated, let me know if more info is needed to reach a conclusion.

Thanks!

Hi.

That sucks man. Was the amp like that from the day one or did the problems start later?

I don't know the circuitry of the newer amps, but a good tech should be able to give an estimate of the cost of the repair.

Wait for Jerrold Tiers to give his opinion though, he might have another idea.

Good luck.

Sam

Sounds like there is indeed some problem with the "A" channel.

But, if "A" will actually get loud, but sounds distorted at low levels, it may be "only" a bias problem.

The "A" channel distortion will show up in mono as well.

Jerrold, thank you for your help.

The "A" channel distorts at any volume with the limit LED coming on with anything I play. Could this be covered by warranty? Or do you know how much this kind of problem might cost to fix?

Like I said, if it distorts but still gets loud, it may be as simple as a bias problem, basically an adjustment.

The old deal with warranty was 5 years from purchase, to ANY owner, so long as they had the original purchase receipt to show date of purchase.

I don't know what the new deal is, if it is different, or the same.

I have heard that some of the customer service folks don't actually know, and have given bad advice and bum information as to what is and is not under warranty. Don't know how true that is.

Loud took apart the SLM warranty repair system, and tried to replace it with a new deal. Apparently that has not worked out as expected.

Now I understand they are trying to put it back together.

They did hire back one of the old factory service guys to co-ordinate with the new warranty service centers, which there are supposed to be 200 of soon.

However, since we R&D folks left right when the new service deal was going on, I really don't know what is going on with warranty service.
