SVT 5 Pro Overdrive Channel suddenly not working after gig

Hey,

I had a gig on Saturday night. During soundcheck, I tried blending in the overdrive channel on my SVT 5 Pro just as I do in every room to see if it worked well in the room or not. I ended up just using the clean channel as it sounded best on its own (this tends to happen at most gigs, but not all).

Anyway, that was the last time I used the overdrive channel, and it was working fine. Yesterday I powered up the amp at home and the overdrive channel suddenly gives me no output other than a faint background fizzy noise that is very quiet but it's there.

Any ideas what happened at what to do about it? I tried doing some channel switching using the footswitch (typically I skip the footswitch and use the buttons on the amp), but the switch didn't help.

I do usually just use the clean channel but having the option to blend in the overdrive is still important to me. If it's totally busted all of a sudden, I don't have a fully functioning amp and that may mean it's time for a new one... never had an issue with this amp until this!

Does the amp have an effects Loop? If so, try linking the Send and Return with a signal cable and see if that helps.

Hi, thank you! But, I actually just came to say that I solved the problem. There is a tiny switch which, when pressed, sends the clean preamp output to one of the stereo power amps, and the overdrive preamp output to the other. I was running only one side of the amp with this switch pressed, so I was missing out on what was being sent to the other side. It must have gotten knocked around when packing up after Saturday's gig.

Happy you figured it out. One of the awesome things about that unit is it's ability to run clean/dirty to two different cabs and tweak the treble, mid, bass accordingly.

I have the SVP-BSP (preamp of this amp) and some times run it into the SVP 1600. It's essentially turns the rig into the 5 pro but, what you don't get is the octaver that's on the actual 5 pro.

Another great amp we lost to the egg heads at LOUD.

Wasn't this Billy Sheehan's signature amp? I was lead to believe that part of the reason why they stopped making it was because Ampeg...or LOUD was screwing over some of the artist endorsements.

Never knew of a Sheehan sig amp, only preamp. Always thought he used the 4 Pro. Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey weren't happy when their BSE rigs got discontinued, I do know that. In almost every case, though, it's lack of sales that causes discos.

It sounds like Billy was going to make the transition to the 5pro but, the relationship may have soured by then. If was no longer endorsing Ampeg, then there's no reason to keep the BSP or the 5pro on the shelf.

In vintage guitar magazine he mentions that he uses two 4 pro to drive a Pierce power amp. Ampeg was in the works to roll all of his needs into one unit.

A lot of endorsers did dislike the former head idiot of LOUD, no doubt. He was solely responsible for the black eye they spent years trying to overcome.

Hey Jimmy, you would know better than anyone else....why did they stop making the 8pro? Sounds like Ampeg did a hard cut after the 4 pro and called it good. Sales on the 4 pro can't be that great, can they?

The 4 Pro has always been pretty consistent with sales over the years, at least it must be because it's still being made. Not their highest seller but would have to at least always be profitable. People seem to not mind spending the cash on a trad SS amp as they do for lightweight technology, so even though the 8 Pro was like state of the art for micro tech, people just didn't buy it in enough numbers to keep it going.
