SVT 7 Pro followup...

So in fairness...some may remember my thread a couple months back that unfortunately took a turn for the worse and got closed due to mudslinging. I had bought a used Rev A head, and suffered the consequences.
Anyhow, I would up ordering a new main board from Ampeg, and after dealing with backorder, just got it a couple days ago. Swapped it out yesterday and it's back in business.
So far so good, gonna work it out at gigs all weekend. This one is a Rev D, so I guess some Rev C issues have been addressed as well.

I'm curious if anyone knows the difference between C and D. No mud slinging, it's been done ad nauseum!! So far I'm happy with the amp, it sounds fantastic, and if Rev D is stable I'll remain absolutely happy with it!!!

Great that they have a rev D. Hope they have it finally sorted.
A lot of folk love this amp and should not have to worry about it failing when they need it.
Fingers crossed

So I traded my micro head for a revision C and obviously regret it now, because even strident defenders of this amp are now wondering if they can get upgrades for their rev c.
Live and learn:hmm:

Ya....

GK did the same thing with the earlier MB amps. Put out failures followed by several revisions. I don't know if it's a "touchy, smps/class D done affordably" type thing, or just newish technology, or just fatcats wanting to cash in on sales as quick as possible but this type of stuff didn't used to happen that much, IMO.

Here's hoping for rev.D. They are damn nice amps when they work.

I dunno whether ur calling me a "strident defender", but I always simply liked my 7 pro.
Still do, & have had zero issues.

Was just wondering, but I'm completely happy with my rev C.
I've used it on probly 30 gigs, a fair few rehearsals & had it real loud
Anyway, I dunno whether I'd even send mine away to get "spayed" but am interested to follow this of course

I think there's just stuff they don't fully understand about micro technology yet. Like why some micros work great with one set of cabs and not so great with another. Happened to me a couple weeks ago with a TH350 at Sam Ash. Worked perfectly with the DB410, and clipped really early and went into protect mode with the SL112. But they'll get it worked out. We'll just be the guinea pigs for a couple more years ;)

Kinda pulled the reins back on posting that in the hopes of not turning this into yet another arguement/bashing thread.

It's not brand specific. Some of the most successful and reliable in the business are having problems with this. Almost every one of these things seems to be having failures/working out bugs, at the expense of the products buyers I might add, except for maybe Genz Benz.

Some of the Genz tone might not be for everybody. Too clean and middy. Hell, it's not even for me, but that is one, along with Walter Woods and God bless 'em, Peavey, who have developed this kind of thing, and taken chances on it when no other company would.

I'm sure I'm leaving out a few there, probably QSC, but you get the point.

Genz Benz does an awesome job but even their heads aren't 100%. However, they have been 100% for many, and so has the TH350, and so have my PF350 and Micro VR, and that's all I care about, so the future for micros looks good. It'll just take a while to work out the bugs.

You are right.

There was that little thing called the mini-disc, in between the cassette tape and the compact disc.....or was it the CD and the laser disc....or the floppy disc and the thumb drive.....wait a minute...now it's all in the clouds.....

I think that's where we are.

Just a comment on the topic rather than on any brand here...

Nothing is ever going to be 100% reliable, the cost of trying to achieve this would be prohibitive to all but the richest of players. Most quality manufacturers strive to get the highest reliability for a cost that is "reasonable" for their target player. Some have done a better job of this than others, but I'm sure the best of intentions was there with everybody.

Regarding the technology, SMPS and Class D are not very forgiving of poor engineering choices, implimentation that exposes it's soft white underbelly, applications that make assumptions that are not accurate, and design/fabrication choices that are not "real world" robust. It is critical that all of the "loose ends" be adequately addressed prior to the acceptance of a design into manufacturing. Again, some have done a better job of this than others, but I'm sure the best of intentions was there with everybody.

Regarding specifically Will's and Jimmy's comments, we didn't take the SMPS/class D transition lightly. I came from the pro audio world where I had been involved with the development of some touring speaker products that used the same technology that we adapted to the Shuttle & Streamliner products, technology with a 10 year track record in the touring industry where many of these specific issues and details had already been successfully worked out. Others have used the same technology but with varying degrees of success. Why? Because the devil's in the details, but again, I'm sure the best of intentions was there with everybody.

It's not the technology, it's the specific applications and implimentations of the technology that defines the performance and reliability.

To me, these are horrible news!

I've had issues with a Rev C head and Ampeg agreed to replace it a few weeks ago but I got another Rev C head. I fear the issue might come back to haunt me.

I'm glad the Rev D is released, I had a feeling that they were working on it.
