SVT-CL vs Peavey VB-3? Which one?

Ampegs "are" prone to problems these days I had a SVT-CL fail on me just recently.
Ampegs is the the most requested backline rental amps in the world because of a reputation forged when Ampeg was a owned by different people in a different era.
The Ampegs of today are not your father's Ampeg

Get the Peavey or find a old Ampeg

A few days ago, I nearly pulled the trigger on a "two-pack" of SVT-CLs I saw on eBay. It's gone now, I tried to find it to provide a link.

They were I believe late 80s, in a road case on wheels that was included. The seller wouldn't separate them. They were brand new, bought for a tour of Asia that never happened, so they sat in climate-controlled storage ever since. I think the bid at the time was $2500 with a BIN of $3000. I could be wrong though.

I'm sure I'll get this one fixed or replaced, and I'll have years of trouble-free operation. I've been repeating that for the last 24 hours.

Bullcrap. Ampeg's the most requested backline because lots of people like them. If they didn't like them, they wouldn't request them. I hear this "tradition" argument about Fender and Ampeg, and it's just not true. For a product to be successful, it still has to be able to compete in today's world. Obviously the Ampeg stuff still competes.

Actually they are. 3 years ago I wouldn't have said that, but they cleaned house at LOUD and actually got people in there who care. All amps can break, even the ones with the very best reputation in the business. And with new tube production being what it is, sometimes you get a bad one in an amp with 11 of them. It's fine not to like Ampeg, and we obviously get that you don't, but I think the new Ampeg stuff is as good quality as anything they've ever made. YMMV, but I have a lot of field experience that bears it out.

Old-ish SVT-CL thread. Kind of interesting that Peavey has a 300w bass head now. Hey I lucked out and got an SLM-era SVT-CL used on craigslist. I didn't do enough research. I could've ended up with a real pile of poopie. That would've frustrated me to no end had I ended up with my nearly 2000 dollar holy grail dream amp head, only to find out it's made in Indochina by people who are paid a dollar a week and they probably don't even care about anything but feeding their families. Do they even know what they are assembling? I mean, 2000 dollars is a poopie ton of money. The world is getting screwed up when 2000 dollars towards an amp head only buys you some Asian junk that falls apart the second you get it home. I hope you got your SVT-CL issue figured out, original poster. Seems like you had some cash to throw around, so I'm sure you eventually found the sweet deal you were looking for.

Hey Ampeg, bring back jobs to the United States, you ******* traitors.
